Going Overboard- Navigating your emotions

The aim of this project was to create a toolkit for children between the ages of 8-12. It teaches children how to handle 'topsy-turvy' emotions as well as emotional intelligence Going Overboard teaches children emotional balance through the design principle of balance and different forms of play such as mastery, biblio, physical and dramatised play.

The theme of balance is evident throughout the toolkit seen Balancing Siphi's Topsy-Turvy Day's narrative and composition. This storybook incorporates coping mechanisms such as grounding, visualisation, and breathing techniques which assist children in coping with topsy-turvy emotions.

The Emotion Ocean is a board game developed with the aim of allowing children to physically navigate the Ocean of Emotion and understand and experience the effects of both negative and positive emotions through play.

Face your Emotions follows dramatised play which teaches children more complex emotions and how to portray them, it follows a lesson plan which introduces children to more difficult-to-understand emotions.

The last game in the toolkit is Whirlpool of Emotions, this game reflects the physical results of being unbalanced. One will become unbalanced and fall over when they hand their hands and feet on too many emotions on the mat, thus creating a reflection and result of what it means to be emotionally unbalanced.
